A cycle ride to Mumlava Waterfall and Krakonoš’s breakfast

16.1 km
Náročnost

Set off on a pleasant cycle ride from Harrachov to the Mumlava Waterfall and Krakonoš’s Breakfast, in one of the most beautiful valleys of the western Krkonoše Mountains. The trip is ideal for leisure cyclists who want to enjoy the mountain scenery without tackling extreme terrain, and there’s also a significantly shorter route for the youngest cyclists.

You can set off directly from the OREA Resort Sklář, from where you can easily join the route towards the centre of Harrachov and on to Harrachova cesta. The second option is to start from the public car park in Harrachov. In that case, bear in mind that the route will be slightly longer as you’ll need to cycle through Harrachov to reach the start of the main part of the trip. Before you set off on your bike, don’t forget to pack a snack at breakfast. At OREA, you can put together your own snack to suit your taste and pack it into the bags provided.

Where does the route go?

The route starts at the OREA Resort Sklář or at the public car park in Harrachov. The first part of the route runs through the centre of the village and serves mainly as a link to the start of the Harrachov Trail. Once you join it, traffic eases off and the landscape quickly changes from built-up areas to mountainous terrain.

The most pleasant part of the trip leads through the forest along the Mumlava River on a tarmac surface with a gentle incline. From the Mumlava Waterfall, the route continues further upstream, deeper into the Mumlava Valley. The climb is longer but gradual and can be managed easily even at a leisurely pace. This section follows the ‘Živá mrtvá Mumlava’ nature trail. The ‘Krakonoš’s Breakfast’ crossroads is a natural spot for a break before heading back.

The return leg of the route turns off via Kládová cesta and heads back to Harrachov through the woodland above Ryžoviště. The terrain here is more rugged and slightly more challenging than on the tarmac path along the Mumlava. From Ryžoviště, the route is mainly downhill or gently undulating, so the final stretch of the walk passes quickly.

A shorter option for children

For younger children or visitors who just want a short trip, we recommend the shorter route to Mumlavský Waterfall and back. This route follows the same path both ways, so you can end the trip and head back at any time. Before reaching Mumlavský Waterfall, you can turn off onto the yellow hiking trail, where you’ll find the Liščí stezka children’s playground.

From OREA Resort Sklář: approx. 5 km there and back, elevation gain approx. 90 to 110 m.
From the Harrachov car park: approx. 3 km there and back, elevation gain approx. 70 to 90 m.

Harrachov

Harrachov is one of the best-known mountain resorts in the western Krkonoše Mountains. It is famous for its glassmaking tradition, as well as its ski jumps, the cable car to Čertova hora and its excellent facilities for hiking, cycling and winter sports.

The Mumlava River

The Mumlava is one of the most distinctive mountain rivers in the western Krkonoše Mountains. Its source streams rise high in the mountains, at an altitude of approximately 1,370 metres above sea level, and after a course of roughly 12.6 kilometres, it flows into the Jizera near Harrachov. Its granite bed is characterised by a succession of boulders, rocky sills, rapids and small waterfalls. The flowing water has also gradually carved out giant potholes here, known as the Devil’s Eyes, which can be seen near the Mumlava Waterfall.

Mumlavský Waterfall

The Mumlava Waterfall is one of the best-known natural tourist attractions in Harrachov. Here, the waters of the Mumlava River plunge from a height of around 10 metres over massive granite steps, creating striking rock basins known as the ‘Giant’s Pots’.

Mumlavské Mine

The mountainous valley of the Mumlava River is one of the most beautiful natural areas in Harrachov. It is characterised by a peaceful, wooded atmosphere, a granite riverbed and gently rising slopes. The area is popular for walking, cycling and, in winter, cross-country skiing.

Krakonoš’s Breakfast

Krakonoš’s Breakfast is a mountain crossroads at the end of the Mumlava Valley. Here you’ll find seating areas and information boards, and during the summer season the KRNAP information centre is open. Thanks to its location, it has the pleasant atmosphere of a secluded mountain spot amidst the woods.

Log Road

The Kládová Trail is a forest path that leads from the Krakonošova snídaně area through the mountain forests back to Ryžoviště and on to Harrachov. The terrain here is more rugged than on the Harrachov trail along the Mumlava. Along the route, there are views towards Ryžoviště.

Rice Field

Ryžoviště is situated below Čertova hora, in one of Harrachov’s main ski areas. In winter, the Alfa cable car operates from here. In summer, hikers and cyclists usually reach Čertova hora via the Delta cable car from the centre of Harrachov.
