Holstejn

Moravian Karst
"Holštejn Castle, hidden inconspicuously in the forests of the Moravian Karst, is today a silent witness to the former glory and power of noble families. It was founded in the 13th century by Hartman of Jedovnice on a strategic rock promontory near the village of the same name. Its location offered not only excellent defences but also a natural overview of the surrounding countryside. One of the most interesting parts is the Hladomorna cave, a medieval prison directly below the castle into which prisoners were lowered through an opening from above. Today it is freely accessible, but closed in winter as it serves as a sanctuary for protected bats. Only remnants of the original castle walls and foundations of the buildings remain, but the place still breathes a mysterious atmosphere. There is a short, sometimes steep, trail to the castle marked with a red hiking trail from the village of Holštejn, where you can park and refresh yourself. Holštejn is an ideal destination for hikers looking for a combination of nature, history and a touch of adventure."
