Villa Tugendhat
Villa Tugendhat in Brno is an icon of modern architecture and one of the most important examples of functionalism in Europe. It was designed by German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in collaboration with Lilly Reich in 1928-1930 for Greta and Fritz Tugendhat. With its revolutionary use of space, steel construction without load-bearing walls, and luxurious materials such as onyx walls and macassar wood, it represents a breakthrough in residential building design.
The villa is located in Brno's Černá Pole district and is set into a hillside overlooking the city. Its interior is famous for its open layout, large glass areas and technical innovations such as sliding windows operated by electric motors. In 2001, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
