Devil's Castle

Moravian Karst
Devil's Castle, also known as Olomučany Castle, is a ruin of a Gothic castle located above the valley of the Svitava River near Blansko in the municipality of Olomučany. The castle was built in the 2nd half of the 13th century, as evidenced by archaeological findings of medieval pottery. The first written mention dates back to 1346, when the castle was part of the property of the Lords of Lipá. Later it was owned by Vilém of Opatovice and Jan Bidlo. The castle probably disappeared during the Hussite Wars or shortly before them. The name of the castle was Olomučany, but the current name ""Devil's Castle"" is based on folk tales. One of them tells of a devil who used to imprison kidnapped girls from the surrounding area in the castle. According to another legend, the castle was built by a black knight in an unusually short time, which raised suspicions that it was the work of the devil himself. Only the remains of the walls and moats of the castle have survived. The ruins are freely accessible and are located on a green marked hiking trail leading from Blansko to Nové hrad and then to Adamov. It is also the end point of the nature trail from Olomučany. Devil's Castle is an ideal destination for lovers of history, nature and mysterious legends. A visit to this place offers not only a glimpse into the medieval past, but also a chance to experience the atmosphere shrouded in legends.
