Pancíř

Sumava

Pancíř is one of those places where you can enjoy the beautiful views of the Šumava Mountains without having to undertake a strenuous mountain hike. The peak rises above Železná Ruda at an altitude of 1,214 metres and is home to the Pancíř Mountain Chalet and its observation tower. From here, there is a sweeping view of the Šumava, across to Bavaria, towards Velký Javor and, on a clear day, as far as the Alps. The first simple wooden observation tower stood here as early as 1880. A short distance from the mountain chalet are the so-called ‘Open Doors’, a popular spot for taking photographs.

Pancíř is also interesting because the main European watershed runs through here. Three rivers have their source here: the Úhlava and the Křemelná flow into the North Sea, whilst the Řezná flows into the Black Sea.

How do you get to Pancíř?

There are several ways to reach Pancíř. A comfortable option is the historic single-seat cable car from Špičák, which has an intermediate station at Hofmanky and terminates directly at Pancíř. The first section of the cable car journey from Špičák to Hofmanky takes approximately 12 minutes, whilst the second section from Hofmanky to Pancíř takes approximately 10 minutes.

If you decide not to take the cable car, there is a tarmac road leading to the summit, which is closed to motor vehicles and can be used on foot or by bike. It is also suitable for pushchairs.

Practical information

Check the cable car’s current operating hours before you set off. The summit is accessible all year round and serves as a ski resort in winter.
