Velký Javor
Großer Arber, known in Czech as Velký Javor, is one of the most significant excursion destinations on the German side of the Bohemian Forest. At 1,456 metres, it is the highest mountain in the Bavarian Forest and is often called the King of the Bavarian Forest. From the summit, you can enjoy views of the Bavarian Forest, the Bohemian Forest, the Great Javor Lake and, in good visibility, also towards the Alps.
A trip here can take several forms. You can take the cable car from the lower station of the Arber Bergbahn or you can enjoy the mountain climb on foot.
You can plan your trip according to your mood, your fitness and the weather. The easiest option is to drive to the lower station of the Arber Bergbahn. The journey from the hotel takes about 20 minutes. From there you can continue by cable car. The cable car covers an elevation of 342 metres, the ride takes approximately 4 minutes and from the top station it's just a short walk to the top views. Those who want to make the trip more leisurely can walk from the lower station and make a mountain climb on the way to the top.
The trip can also be planned without a car. From Železná Ruda, it is possible to take the train connection towards the border station Železná Ruda-Alžbětín / Bayerisch Eisenstein and then continue according to the current seasonal public transport options or on foot. The specific connections may change throughout the year, so it is a good idea to check the current timetable, cable car operation and weather before you go.
If you want to extend your trip, you can also combine Großer Arber with a visit to the Großer Arbersee. From Bayerisch Eisenstein, a moderate circular route of approximately 19 km leads across the lake and the Großer Arber.
Sturdy shoes, layered clothing and plenty of water are recommended for the trip. The weather can change more quickly at the top than down in the valley, so it's worth checking the current conditions, cable car operation and any changes in traffic before you set off.
